GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - This weekend, skies will not dampen the mood for those observing the skies in honor of International Astronomy Day on Saturday, April 21.
Grand Rapids Public Museum and the Grand Rapids Amateur Astronomy Association have partnered for celebrations at the museum.
On Friday, April 20, GRAAA is hosting a free public viewing at the James C. Veen Observatory in Lowell to celebrate the Statewide Astronomy Night. The event will be from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. and will offer special programming.
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, telescopes will be out on the lawn for sky viewing while inside, special space-related activities will be ongoing. The Chaffee Planetarium will have shows running at the top of every hour.
Also happening this weekend is the Lyrid meteor shower. The peak of activity will be Sunday, April 22 before dawn. Meteor rate will be approximately 20 meteors per hour.
