GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Nutrition is always important, but it's arguably never more important than when you're fueling up for a workout. But it's also important to remember to keep fueling during and after a workout as well.
Health nutritionist Sara Van Eerden from the McCahill Group came in to tell us why it was so important and offer us some tips and tricks.
When you fuel your body with the proper nutrition, your body has the energy it needs to sustain a good workout, optimizing physical activity. But you might ask what you should eat. Here are some ideas for before, during and after your workout.
Before you hit the gym you want to focus on carbs which are perfect to burn.
Examples:
- Plain yogurt with berries, honey and cinnamon
- Whole wheat toast with a bit of nut butter and banana slices
During your workout, make sure to keep the fuel coming. If your workout is strenuous and last longer than 60 minutes, you may need to refuel with an easily digested carbohydrate as well as replace any lost fluid. Small healthy snacks can also help you keep moving.
Examples:
- Raisins
After your workout, your body needs time to recover. At this point, you should focus on carbohydrates, protein and hydration.
Examples:
- Whole grain bagel with egg and avocado
- Whole wheat pasta, chicken, veg, pesto
