20-year-old Rockford man hit by vehicle and killed near Fifth Third Ballpark

The crash happened around 3:10 a.m. Friday

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - West River Drive near Fifth Third Ballpark was temporarily shut down because of a fatal crash involving a pedestrian.

The accident happened around 3:10 a.m. on Friday, April 19. According to the Kent County Sheriff's Office, deputies were sent to the area on reports of someone standing in the road. While deputies were on the way, Kent County Dispatch received a second call that someone had been hit by a vehicle. 

A 20-year-old Rockford man was struck by the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff's office says the driver -- a 33-year-old Belmont man -- sustained a minor injury.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, however the incident is still under investigation.

Both the northbound US-131 off ramp to West River Drive and the ramp to West River from from US-131 southbound were closed while crews were on scene. It has since reopened.
