The DNR says a bald eagle was shot while in its roost before it fell into the limbs of a large tree near 20 Mile Road near Grand Center in Grant Township on Thursday, March 1.
Investigators confirmed the cause of death in part by sending the eagle to the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Lansing for a necropsy.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers are also asking citizens to assist in providing more information. Citizens can remain anonymous in their reporting and may be eligible for a reward if their information results in a successful conviction.
“Bald eagles are a majestic, protected species. It’s important we resolve this case and that any violators are held accountable,” said 1st Lt. John Jurcich, district supervisor for the DNR Law Enforcement Division.
Penalties for killing a bald eagle can total up to $2,500 and/or 90 days in jail.
