HOLLAND, Mich. — The man convicted in a deadly 2016 shooting outside the Hookah Lounge in Holland has lost a bid to have his conviction overturned on the grounds that he acted in self-defense.
An Ottawa County jury convicted 27-year-old Aaron Young of second-degree murder, carrying a concealed weapon and felony use of a firearm in the shooting death of Anthony Lamb.
Lamb, 22, was shot in the parking lot of the Hookah Lounge on Sept. 11, 2016. Investigators say Young and a group of friends got into a fight with Lamb and a group of Lamb’s friends. The prosecution said Young fired his gun first.
Young said he shot Lamb in self-defense. The jury rejected Young’s claim and convicted him as charged.
The court of appeals, in a three-page ruling, said there was sufficient evidence to support the jury’s verdict.
A judge sentenced Young to between 18-¾ and 50 years for second-degree murder and a mandatory two-year term for felony use of a firearm.
Young is at a state prison in Ionia. He is not eligible for release until September of 2037.
