Man ordered to stand trial for street robbery and stabbing

The suspect, identified as Beeks, ran towards a nearby parking structure. With the help of local businesses and witnesses, the suspect was located within 30 minutes.

A Grand Rapids man accused of stabbing a pedestrian near downtown has been ordered to stand trial for what police say was a random attack.

Kamari Lamont Beeks, 19, is charged with armed robbery, assault with intent to rob while armed and assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder for the July 30 attack.

He is accused of approaching a 21-year-old man near the corner of Cherry Street and Grandville Avenue SW and stabbing the victim twice. He then took a backpack from a 25-year-old woman who was walking with the man. She was not injured.

Bystanders tried to stop the suspect, and in the process, a 52-year-old man was assaulted, according to Grand Rapids police.

The suspect, identified as Beeks, ran towards a nearby parking structure. With the help of local businesses and witnesses, the suspect was located within 30 minutes.

Evidence of the crimes were located along the flight path, in the parking ramp and with the suspect, Grand Rapids police said.

Under a plea deal, two assault charges will be dismissed if Beeks enters a plea to armed robbery causing serious injury. The armed robbery charge is punishable by up to life in prison.

Beeks this week waived a preliminary hearing in Grand Rapids District Court, moving the case to Kent County Circuit Court.

He is being held in the Kent County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
