A Kent County jury on Friday convicted a Grand Rapids man of second-degree murder for a deadly shooting last May outside a business on the city’s Southwest Side.
Andy Gonzalez was convicted in the death of 23-year-old D’Andre Bullis Sr., who died from a gunshot to the head. He was also convicted of attempted murder for shooting 26-year-old Manuel Villarreal in the leg. The shooting victims were cousins.
The two men were near a hair salon on Grandville Avenue near Cordelia Street SW when Gonzalez fired several shots. Bullis, who lived in Wyoming, was the father of two.
Gonzalez was arrested a day after the May 5th shooting. The trial in front of Kent County Circuit Court Judge George Quist got underway on Monday. Closing arguments took place Thursday before the case was sent to the jury. The verdicts were returned late Friday afternoon.
Gonzalez, 23, faces up to life in prison when he returns to court for sentencing. He is being held without bond in the Kent County Jail.
Gonzalez has a criminal record that includes drug and weapons offenses. He was arrested by Grand Rapids police in Nov. 2015 on Hall Street west of Ionia Avenue SW. Police recovered heroin, a loaded firearm and the prescription drug alprazolam, court records show.
Gonzalez was sentenced in Feb. 2016 to five months in the Kent County Jail and placed on probation for three years. A condition of probation required that Gonzalez not be involved in gang-related activities.
Gonzalez was brought back into court for violating probation. He was sent back to jail in July, 2016 and released in early January of 2017. He was locked up for the fatal shooting on May 6, 2017.
