5 things to know Monday, September 17, 2018

Here are the 5 things you should know before heading out the door today.

Each morning 13 ON YOUR SIDE does the work for you and gathers the top five stories from overnight. Here’s what people are talking about this morning:

FREE TUITION: The Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education will vote on a resolution to formally establish the Grand Rapids Promise Zone Authority tonight. That means graduates of all public, private and charter schools within the district could receive in-state college and trade school scholarships.

HUMIDITY IS HERE: Today, West Michigan will be sunny, warm and humid. Highs in the mid 80s.

LOSING LIONS: The Detroit Lions are 0-2 in the season, after falling to the 49ers Sunday. Matthew Stafford's touchdown passes to Marvin Jones and Michael Roberts closed the point gap in the 4th quarter, but it wasn't enough to win. Lions lose 30-27.

REACTION TO GRPD SHOOTING: Grand Rapids Police are under public scrutiny after an officer shot a dog. Police were called about a dog on the loose, chasing neighbors. Police tried to snare the 5-year-old pitbull twice. On the second try, an officer fell back and dropped the snare. GRPD says the dog charged. The body cam video was quickly posted on their Facebook page. The owner says she was at work at the time, but somehow her dog got loose from her chain.

NEW FLAVOR: Hudsonville Ice Cream will debut its 3rd Michigan Artisan Collection flavor Wednesday, in time for ArtPrize 10. Ferris Coffee Caramel Cold Brew is made from their Nitro Cold Brew Coffee, with a caramel swirl. See a list of locations serving it up, here.
