How pieces of Artprize's past became permanent marks on Grand Rapids

The pieces that are now permanent parts of the city's DNA, became such with help from people not actually involved in the festival.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - ArtPrize has left an indelible mark on Grand Rapids beyond the festival's three-week span each year.

The pieces that are now permanent parts of the city's DNA became such with help from people not actually involved in the festival.

"There’s this incredible legacy all over the city of ArtPrize's past," said ArtPrize's artistic director, Kevin Buist.

Buist said the ArtPrize staff had hoped that would be the case, but were not sure how or what that would look like. A decade later, there are more than 30 previous ArtPrize entries that continue to exist around Grand Rapids.

"Most of the process by which things go from being temporarily here for ArtPrize to being permanent is not actually orchestrated by us," Buist explained. "It's in between the artists, the venue, the collector and perhaps the city—we end up playing catch up later to find out what ended up being permanent."

Buist said they do attempt to keep a running list of which ArtPrize pieces remain on display around West Michigan, but their list is incomplete.

Check out their current list below. See a piece missing from the list? Let us know, and we will add it!
