Brother, sister treated for rabies after dog attack in Allegan County

Both victims were taken by ambulance to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo and treated for serious tears and lacerations.

WAYLAND, Mich. - Two people were seriously hurt when one of their dogs attacked them on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Michigan State Police Troopers were called around 10 a.m. to a home in Gun Plain Township on the report of a dog that had attacked the caller and was currently attacking her brother.

Troopers arrived to find the injured woman and her brother on his back on the ground, covered in blood, with the dog actively attacking him.

The man told authorities it was his dog and told them to shoot. The dog was shot twice before it was killed.

Both people were taken by ambulance to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo and treated for serious tears and lacerations. The man has nerve damage and will need skin grafts if his arm can be saved.

Deputies said the 7-year-old, 80 pound dog was owned by the 56-year-old man since it was a puppy. The victim told troopers it had nipped at people in the past but never attacked.

Before the attack, the man’s 49-year-old sister arrived at his house to give him a ride when the dog attacked her, biting her hand and arm. The owner intervened to remove the dog when it turned on him and the sister called 911.

It is unclear what prompted the dog to attack.

Both victims are being treated for rabies, and the dog was taken by troopers to a local veterinary hospital where the doctor forwarded the animal to Michigan State University for rabies testing.
