Customers line up for fries at HopCat

Line forms early to claim free crack fries once a week for a year at new HopCat.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The new HopCat Bar and Restaurant opens September 8 at Knapps Corner on the East Beltline in Grand Rapids.

And some customers were counting the minutes Friday afternoon. That’s because, when they open the doors at 11 a.m. Saturday, HopCat is giving their first 200 customers free Crack Fries once a week for a year.

To make sure he gets a weekly basket of those fries Derrick Samuels started waiting at the front door Friday afternoon.

“I like standing in line waiting,” he says. “It’s fun for the fellowship with other people. Getting to know other people.”

Knapps Corner is the 17th HopCat location. Managers say they have never had any customers line up so early to get free Crack Fries.

“Our crack fries, as everyone in Michigan knows by now, are amazing,” explains HopCat Travel Ambassador Jessica Roach. “We are very excited to see people already lined up.”

A basic basket of crack fries is $6 at HopCat. But on opening day at Knapps Corner, crack fries are free for everyone.

“They are so good,” says Samuels. “Some people think I’m crazy. They want the crack fries but don’t think they can stand in line for that long. If I make an event of it, then I think it is super fun and worth it to wait in line.”
