East Grand Rapids School Board chooses new Superintendent

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The East Grand Rapids Board of Education has unanimously chosen the district's next superintendent. Dr. Heidi Kattula, the executive director of Oakland Schools, was chosen after a four month search that included 29 applicants for the position.

Dr. Kattula was chosen due to her strength in collaboration, her ability to increase student achievement through inclusion and accountability, and her experience in instructional leadership across all grade levels.

East Grand Rapids School Board President Natalie Bernecker says, “Dr. Kattula stood out among the highly-qualified field of candidates for her proven track record in making student-focused decisions that support academic success. She has in-depth expertise in instructional strategies, innovative professional development programs, and breadth in curriculum. Her strength as a communicator and a collaborative leader to inspire and build positive relationships will continue East Grand Rapids Public Schools’ Tradition of Excellence."

Dr. Kattula has 26 years of experience working in public education. She started as a high school math teacher and department chair in Ohio. She also helped coach swimming, track, cross country and volleyball. She then became the Assistant Principal at Wayne Memorial High School. Dr. Kattula also spent 13 years in the Bloomfield Hills School District, before becoming the Executive Director of Oakland Schools two years ago.

Kattula earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and her teaching certifications from the University of Michigan. She has a Master of Arts in Educational Administration and Supervision from Northern Michigan University. Her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Study is from Wayne State University.

Dr. Kattula will start as Superintendent of East Grand Rapids Schools on August 1, 2018.
