GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - Construction on U.S. 31 in Spring Lake and Grand Haven caused backups on Tuesday evening. The roadwork won't be complete until the end of September, so police are telling drivers to expect delays or find another route.

MDOT says that there will be lane closures on U.S. 31 from Van Wagoner Street to Jackson Street. Originally, the work was scheduled to be done on Friday, Sept. 21. But the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety said that the repairs will last until at least the end of the month.

The construction includes repairs on the north end of the U.S. 31 drawbridge. MDOT told police that they are replacing sections of cement and the new sections need 24 hours to set before cars can drive on it.

Traffic in both directions will go down to one lane while MDOT continues to work on repairs.

"For morning and evening commutes, it is recommended that you leave early or seek an alternate route via M231 or 68th Ave," Grand Haven police posted on Facebook.
