The Grand Rapids Fire Department and DTE Energy are still trying to identify the source of a gas smell on Monday, April 2.
13 On Your Side also received reports from residents who said they could smell it in the Knapp Street and Plainfield Avenue area. A dispatcher with the Kent County Sheriff's Office said he could smell at their offices.
DTE says it received over 100 calls about the potentially explosive gas coming from the north side of the city.
"My 5-year-old, that was his big thing," said Matt Steenwyk."He was scared to get out of the car. He was like are we going to blow up?"
"Anytime you smell gas in your home you are concerned there might be an explosion," added LuAnn Russell.
DTE sent technicians with gas detection devices door-to-door. They found a few small leaks, but nothing that would cause the strong odor detected Monday night.
"He said it all read out as zeros," says Russell. "He said we are fine and not to worry about it."
At the time of the calls, the wind had shifted from the south to the northwest, creating a pocket that held that smell in that particular area for an extended period of time.
