'Magic' Johnson guest speaking Mercy Health's 125th anniversary event

During the Community Anniversary Luncheon, special guest Earvin "Magic" Johnson will speak.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Mercy Health Saint Mary's Hospital is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.

The hospital will be marked the milestone starting in August and will continue to do so until the end of the year. The first event was on August 18, where all babies born on the anniversary at Mercy Health Saint Mary's received a gift.

“What began as a small, faith-enriched facility more than a century ago has grown exponentially while maintaining expert doctors and staff committed to providing, accessible and personal care to our patients," said Bill Manns, president of Mercy Health Saint Mary’s.

On October 15, Earvin "Magic" Johnson will be in Grand Rapids at Mercy Health's Community Anniversary Luncheon held at DeVos Place. Tickets are on sale right now, and are $125. To purchase a ticket, click here.

The healthcare facility was originally established in 1893 as a 15-bed hospital in the former McNamara home on South Lafayette Avenue. Five years later, they doubled the amount of beds and developed a training school for nurses.

In 1911, Saint Mary's built a new 75-bed hospital on the corner of Cherry Street and Lafayette Avenue, where the Mercy Health Lacks Cancer Center now stands.

By the late 1970s, Saint Mary's Hospital expanded a number of times, bringing the total number of beds to 370.

On November 9, Mercy Health will be hosting their 125th Anniversary Gala. More details on that event will be released later.
