MUSKEGON, Mich. - October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and each year Every Woman's Place hosts their Power of the Purse event to increase awareness in the community about the issues of domestic and sexual violence.

Regardless of age, economic status, educational background, race, religion, or nationality, 1 in every 3 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, studies show. This violence causes physical injury, psychological trauma, and sometimes death, with the effects crossing multiple generations.

"We're encouraging involvement and raising awareness in the community by taking a giant purple purse on the road. We want to invite the public and empower supporters to become part of ending domestic and sexual violence," said Lori Rasmussen, Executive Director of Every Woman's Place.

There are no targeted boundaries for victims of domestic violence.

"Domestic violence happens to all age groups, income levels, and races," said Rasmussen.

Last year, Every Woman's Place provided our community with free services designed to help individuals discover their options, heal from trauma, and grow into thriving members of our community.

Nearly 500 women and children found safety and refuge from violence and abuse at Every Woman's Place. Over 1,700 victims of violence received counseling, advocacy and support services free of cost.

The giant purple purse will be parked at Power of the Purse, a fundraising event held October 11, at Fricano's Place in downtown Muskegon from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased on their website.

The money raised will support shelter operations to help survivors of domestic and sexual assault.

The event features a live auction of purses, and a silent auction of luggage, jewelry, and other accessories.
