Trucks keep hitting the 100th Street bridge over U-S 131 near Byron Center, and as 13 On Your Side reported earlier in the week, one man took it upon himself to create a Facebook event in response.
Just this year, five trucks have reportedly hit the 100th Street bridge.
As a result, Mike Niemchick created a Facebook event to bubble wrap the bridge.
As of Thursday evening, almost 3,000 people marked they were interested, and almost 350 marked they were going.
Then the Michigan State Police Rockford Post sent a press release.
It said in part, “The Michigan State Police is strongly advising against this event and strict enforcement action will be taken if necessary.”
But are people actually going to bubble wrap the 100th Street bridge this weekend?
THE ANSWER
The Verify team asked the event’s creator if people are actually planning to follow through.
Niemchick responded with this: “Considering the Michigan State Police have now officially advised against the event, I guess the event being real or fake is moot. It’s too bad, really. Now I have to inform thousands of bridge loving individuals that the party is off.”
We can Verify people are not actually going to to bubble wrap the 100th Street bridge.
The team spoke with Sgt. Jason Nemecek and he said he understands people’s frustration with it affecting their drive.
But the department’s biggest concern is people’s safety since hundreds showing up in that area would be a problem.
Also, if you were one of the people planning on going, the sergeant said it’s illegal to place things on overpasses.
