BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The 100th Street bridge in southern Kent County has been hit seven times by semis this year. I'll say that again. Seven times.
But the Michigan Department of Transportation has a plan to change that. Early Tuesday, April 17, they announced a plan to replace and upgrade the bridge, tentatively scheduled for 2020.
So what happens in the meantime? Earlier this year Michigan lawmakers and Governor Snyder approve additional General Fund money for repair projects across the state. Some of that money will go toward resurfacing U.S. 131 and removing a few inches of pavement to increase clearance under the bridge.
The maximum legal height of trucks in Michigan is 13 feet 6 inches, and any truck carrying loads higher than that require a permit per state law.
EDITOR'S NOTE: A previous version of this story stated the minimum legal height of a bridge was 13 feet and 6 inches in Michigan, however, that is incorrect. This version of the story reflects those changes.
