Woman charged with kidnapping baby boy from GR will undergo competency exam

The woman who sparked an Amber Alert earlier this month appeared in court Tuesday morning.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A judge granted a defense attorney's request for a mental health evaluation for a 19-year-old woman accused of abducting a boy she was babysitting in Grand Rapids.

Iyesha Gibbs sparked an Amber Alert on August 2, after she allegedly took off with Miquis Jenkins, who she was supposed to be babysitting.

Gibbs and the child were located by police in Benton Harbor.

Gibbs' attorney requested a competency exam during her probable cause hearing Tuesday, to determine if she understands the charge against her and can assist in her own defense.

The judge granted the exam, which could take several weeks to complete. Gibbs remains in the Kent County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

Gibbs is charged with kidnapping-child enticement. The felony offense is punishable by up to life in prison.
