Who is new MSU athletic director Bill Beekman?

Beekman was appointed as MSU's interim athletic director by interim president John Engler on Feb. 5, roughly two weeks after Mark Hollis, the university's former athletic director, announced his retirement.

EAST LANSING --Michigan State's new athletic director, the university's 19th, has no experience being in charge of any college sports.

But Bill Beekman, 51, does have plenty of experience at MSU serving a variety of roles.

News Monday of Beekman's appointment as permanent athletic director adds a new title to his already extensive resume.

Beekman was appointed as MSU's interim athletic director by interim president John Engler on Feb. 5, roughly two weeks after Mark Hollis, the university's former athletic director, announced his retirement.

Before then, Beekman served as MSU's vice president and secretary of the Board of Trustees.

According to Beekman's Facebook page, he has several ties to Michigan.

He attended Okemos High School, according to the page, and attended MSU and Wayne State University in Detroit.

The page also indicates Beekman attended Northwestern University in Evanston Ill. and the Kellogg School of Management, also in Evanston.

Before Beekman was named interim athletic director, he had served as MSU's vice president and Board of Trustees secretary since 2008.

Prior to those roles, Beekman served as executive director of the MSU Alumni Association.

He joined MSU in 1995 as administrator with the MSU HealthTeam, according to a bioposted on the university's website.

He also spent time as assistant dean for planning and finance in the College of Human Medicine and taught health policy and health finance in the College of Human Medicine and the College of Law.

On top of those roles, Beekman also served as a senior consultant to MSU's provost and the vice president for finance and operations.

Beekman earned a bachelor of arts degree in justice, morality, and constitutional democracy from MSU's James Madison College, an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and a law degree from Wayne State University Law School, according to MSU's website.

He will lead an athletic department that ranked during the 2016-17 year No. 21 among all athletic departments nationwide in revenue ($126,021,377), according to USA Today.

According to a report posted on MSU's website, the athletic department's estimated revenue for the 2017-18 fiscal year is $127,680,449.

The athletic department operates 19 sports facilities, ranging from Spartan Stadium and Breslin Center to the university's indoor tennis facility and Rearick Golf Complex.

It manages 23 sports programs, including 12 for female athletes.
