Funnel cloud spotted Thursday in Muskegon

A funnel cloud was spotted Thursday, Aug. 16 in Muskegon. There were no reports of damage.

MUSKEGON, Mich. - A funnel cloud was spotted Thursday, Aug. 16 in Muskegon near Thunderbird Raceway on the north end of town.

Several photos were shared with 13 ON YOUR SIDE via Facebook.

Witnesses initially reported the funnel cloud as a tornado. However, there is no evidence that the cloud reached the ground. The cloud extended at least halfway to the surface.

The storm popped up where the lake breeze converged with a westward moving front.

If the funnel cloud had reached the ground, this would have been only the second twister in Michigan in 2018.

The state averages around 16 tornadoes a year.
