GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — GR Outside is hoping for donations from the community after all the sleds in their sled library were taken.

The sled library was started this winter as a pilot project in Richmond Park, Mulick Park and Plaster Creek Park. Anyone visiting the parks was encouraged to use a sled on-site for free and return it before leaving.

GR Outside said Wednesday that all the sleds in the libraries had been taken, and that they are unable to keep replacing them with how quickly the sleds have been stolen.

"Our team hesitated to announce the loss of these sleds because our goal is not to spread shame or guilt," the announcement on Facebook reads. "Ultimately, we felt it was fair to tell our community the truth about how this project went."

GR Outside said the sled stations will remain throughout the winter, but sleds will not be replaced. Anyone wanting to donate is welcome to drop sleds off at any of the stations.

For anyone wanting to borrow sleds and other winter gear, there is a Gear Library in Roosevelt Park that can be used.

GR Outside is an initiative that works to ensure the community has access to the outdoors and equipment to enjoy it. To learn more, click here.
