April is Autism Awareness Month. It is not well known that people who have an autism spectrum disorder have a significantly increased risk for also having a mental health disorder. Dr. Heide Rollings is the medical director of the future Pine Rest Pediatric Center of Behavioral Health and she joined us to talk about autism and mental health. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics more than 75% of children with autism have a mental health condition, including anxiety, depression, or ADHD. Many are diagnosed with more than one mental health disorder. Pine Rest will soon open its Pediatric Center of Behavioral Health, where they will treat the many intricacies of an autism diagnosis.
