The integration of the former Spectrum Health and Beaumont Health into Corewell Health has been a game-changer for the organ transplant programs. The newly integrated transplant programs allow for streamlined patient referrals and seamless care throughout the transplant process across regions.
We caught up with Dr. Catherine Bartnik, Medical Director of Hepatology at Corewell Health in West Michigan and Dr. M. Rasm Al Sibae, Director of Transplant Hepatology, Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital to learn more about the success of the liver transplant program.
Dr. Bartnik said collaboration made perfect sense for the two historic programs. Corewell Health on the east side of the state offered adult kidney and liver transplants, and Corewell Health in West Michigan offered adult heart, lung, and pediatric kidney transplants.
According to Dr. Bartnik, both teams have been working hard to streamline patient experience.
She said their goal has been to enhance offerings to patients through a unified, comprehensive, state-wide solid organ transplant program, making care simple, equitable and affordable.
Dr. Al Sibae said the program has had 53 total referrals since September of 2022, resulting in five transplants, and there are currently two referral patients listed and awaiting liver transplant.
According to Dr. Al Sibae, Corewell Health’s survival rates lead the three programs in Michigan and are much better than the national average. “We anticipate even greater successes and outcomes moving forward,” said Al Sibae.
