Parenting has a lot of rewards and sometimes a lot of challenges.
What worked for one child often doesn't for another.
And some children have us seriously doubting our ability to parent. Pine Rest’s Allison Brower joined us to talk about the Nurtured Heart Approach® (NHA) and how shifting our mindset and energy can lead to positive change in our relationships.
Brower explained NHA is a set of three core methodologies originally developed in 1972 by Howard Glasser for working with the most difficult children:
- Neutralize Negative Behavior
- Energize Positive Behavior in Meaningful Ways
- Demonstrate Fair and Consistent Boundaries
According to Brower, NHA has a proven, transformative impact on every child, including those with behavioral diagnosis such as ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Reactive Attachment Disorder – almost always without the need for medications or long-term treatment. Some of the benefits of the Nurtured Heart Approach include:
- Understanding the uniqueness of the challenging child in the here and now.
- Teaching a child to “Shift” or “flip” his/her intensity in successful ways
- Creating a deeper sense of relationship by building success and inner wealth for the child
- Identifying behavior that is working by feeding the soul with greatness this is not complimenting and feeding empty words
- Teaching a child to be fearless in standing in their own Greatness
Pine Rest offers a series of NHA classes to help parents and others who work with children develop new/different skills to address the challenges with difficult or intense children and help them thrive.
