Matt Gard's official title at 13 ON YOUR SIDE is Senior Producer, but he does a little bit of everything.
Since elementary school, Matt knew he wanted to be a journalist. That's when he saw sports photographers filming Friday night football games in his hometown of New Carlisle, Ind. Growing up in a small town, it made him feel special that someone would take the time to showcase his community on TV. He wanted to share that special feeling with others when he grew up.
Matt has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. He started his career at FOX 28 News in South Bend and Elkhart, Ind. as a morning show producer.
In December 2013, Matt moved to Grand Rapids to be a producer for 13 ON YOUR SIDE Mornings. In 2019, Matt became a multi-skilled journalist for 13 ON YOUR SIDE Late Night. In 2022, he became the champion of a franchise called "One Good Thing," which focuses on positive news in West Michigan and introduces viewers to opportunities to improve their local communities.
Matt also produces and reports for 13 ON YOUR SIDELINES, a high school football highlights show that runs weekly in the fall. He was a part of the 13 ON YOUR SIDELINES team that won "Best Sportscast" in the 2021 Broadcast Excellent Awards, presented by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.
Outside of work Matt loves spending time with his wife Katie and his cats Rocky and Reggie, watching sports, trying Michigan craft beers, and birdwatching. They may not be Michigan natives, but Matt and Katie hope Grand Rapids will be their forever home.
