GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Dancing in the 13 ON YOUR SIDE news studio has become part of the norm for our morning team.
We regularly try the latest dance challenges and trends on social media, but there was an added layer of pressure for our latest dance, which was seen and judged by Derek Hough, ahead of his upcoming performance in Grand Rapids.
“This show is jam packed,” Hough said during a recent Zoom call. “It has a live band with live music and an amazing cast of dancers. They're just breathtaking, plus amazing costumes. We have about 20 different changes in set design, beautiful lighting. I mean, it's a full production. And it has every genre of dance you could think of - Latin, ballroom, tap, contemporary, all different genres of music from big band music, rock and roll, symphonic. It really covers the gamut. It's got a lot of energy, a lot of heart.”
Hough, who launched to superstardom on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, said the dancing in his show is highly advanced and very energetic, and he credits the other dancers onstage with the success of the show.
“When you look at the cast of dancers that I have, what they do is extraordinary, it really is. It has my name up there, but when you go see that show, you're going to know everybody's name because they are unbelievable, truly, truly amazing," Hough said. "Out of all the shows I've done and all the tours I've created and been a part of, this one I truly am the most proud of. Just the standard that we held ourselves to, of just energy, choreography, creativity, all the things. We really put our heart and souls into this one, so I can't wait for people to see it."
Eventually, we had to ask what he thought about our recent dance, which was inspired by a performance on Dancing with the Stars.
“I have to say, I was really impressed, and I'm not even just saying that,” Hough said, much to the delight of the morning team. “I was super impressed. You all were on time. You all had swag. You all had groove and rhythm. You all are fantastic! I was really impressed, truly.”
