ZEELAND, Mich. — Monday morning brought with it a lot of sunshine. At the Critter Barn, that led to a healthy crowd of people. Even as the weather turned to April showers in the afternoon, visitors came out to enjoy a close-up look at the newest additions to the attraction.
Staff members said spring is "baby season" at Critter Barn, and that's why they host their "Spring Fling" every year.
"People can interact with all the baby animals - from chicks to ducklings to rabbits to calves and even our goats and our lambs and pigs," said executive director Tony McCaul.
Critter Barn will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. this week. Rain is in the forecast, but McCaul said that shouldn't deter guests.
"Even if the weather's not perfect, we have actually two heated rooms and all of our animals are inside. As long as you come with clothes that can go from barn to barn, you can actually enter interact with the animals. Then we just have our staff going around and educating you about farm animals," he said.
The Critter Barn was located on Adams Street until 2022 when they moved to their new, 36-acre location near the corner of 80th Avenue and Felch Street. But McCaul said the new location is only half-built.
"If you come to our farm now, you'll get to see we're working on our small animal barn that is going to have all of our baby animals in it. That will be done the end of this fall, and we're so excited just to keep adding. So every time you come back to Critter Barn, you'll get to see new things being built," he said.
