GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — On Tuesday afternoon, a thick layer of fog descended upon Blandford Nature Center giving visitors a unique view as they walked through the center's nature trails. Meanwhile the staff at Blandford is preparing for an action-packed month of February, which will be more affordable for West Michigan families.
"We love to offer these opportunities when we can find the proper funding to offer free admission to our community. When people haven't been out here before, maybe admission was something that prevented them from coming here," said wildlife educator Sarah Chertos.
All month long it will be free to hike Blandford's trails, and there will be some other opportunities to save money at the nature center as well.
"We're going to offer some free programming like story time with the animals. We'll have a few Saturdays throughout the month for free to get an idea of what a program is like with us when you get to see the animals up close," Chertos said.
If winter weather returns to West Michigan, it will also be a time when people can take advantage of snowshoe rentals.
"We get a lot of people who come out during our admission-free months who have never been to Blandford and they just want to see what we're all about. And then after that, they're returning to paid programs in the months that follow, or they're becoming camp families. It's really kind of a gateway to being a part of the Blandford community," Chertos said.
