FERNDALE, Mich. — Once a year The Woodward Dream Cruise takes over Metro Detroit, filling the streets with the rumble of engines and the air with the smell of gasoline.
Called "North America's largest celebration of automotive culture," this year the cruise is happening on Saturday, Aug. 17.
Exactly two weeks before this, on Saturday, Aug. 3, a new kind of cruise is coming to town.
The first "Clean Cruise" featuring only electric vehicles is happening in downtown Ferndale on E. 9 Mile between Woodward and Leland.
Hosted by the Michigan Electric Vehicle Alliance, there will be many activities to participate in beginning at 11 a.m. before the cruise starts at 3 p.m.
“Electric vehicles are pivotal in addressing many pressing challenges of our time," said MEVA Executive Director Amy Rogghe. "They are integral to a broader transition towards cleaner, healthier and safer communities. Maintaining Michigan's long-standing leadership in the automotive industry, both nationally and globally, is crucial for fostering a strong and prosperous state economy."
Organizers said the event will have a range of electric vehicles from different manufacturers that attendees will be able to see up close.
There will be presentations and discussions about the environmental, economic and health benefits of driving electric vehicles as well as keynote speeches from industry experts.
A "Kidz Corner" will have face painting, electric car race track games, trivia, coloring and prizes.
There will also be EV trivia with prizes and a Q&A booth for questions about EVs.
Attendees can participate in a raffle contest as well.
A signup form to drive your EV in the cruise can be found here.
Those driving their EVs in the cruise are encouraged to decorate them.
