MUSKEGON, Mich. — The "best seat in the house" to view Muskegon Fourth of July fireworks isn't on a porch, a blanket, or a lawn chair, it's on the USS LST 393.

Moored at the Mart Dock downtown, the World War II-era ship was involved in the invasions of Sicily and Italy and made 30 round trips to Omaha Beach during D-Day in 1944.

This Fourth of July, the ship's top three decks will be open to the public to see the fireworks on Muskegon Lake.

The fireworks will be set off a few hundred yards from the stern of the ship and visitors are encouraged to arrive before police close nearby streets at 9 p.m.

The cost is a $5 donation per person to help fund the restoration of the USS LST 393 and the operations of the veterans museum. Parking does cost extra.

It's recommended to bring personal seating. Concessions will be sold during the event.
