GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The weather outside is cold, but the action on the ice inside Patterson Ice Center and Eagles Ice Center is hot as dozens of sled hockey teams face off this weekend in Griff's Sled Hockey Classic.
"We have 12 junior teams and 13 adult teams that are here from all across the Midwest and the east, and we're here celebrating sled hockey, which is awesome," said Molly McKinney who serves as sports coordinator for Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Center.
"It's incredible. And I know that a lot of families love coming to Grand Rapids. We just have this wonderful opportunity."
Six games took place on Friday night. On Saturday, games will happen from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Then on Sunday, championship games will take place during the first half of the day. McKinney said it's a great opportunity for people who have never seen sled hockey before to get acquainted with the game.
"Oh my gosh - that stopping and starting and making this quick turns. It's just incredible how well they move and how fast the game really is," she said.
"It's just so cool to see, even our youngest athletes all the way up to our adult athletes, being able to have all of their family come and be able to see them, because we travel all over the country. So to be able to have everyone's family and friends and just have that camaraderie of everyone coming to Grand Rapids and celebrating the amazing sport of sled hockey."
