Many events happening in West Michigan the first official weekend of summer

As of today, summer is officially here and in full swing.

Those still looking for things to do to fill up their weekend calendar have plenty of options.

For starters, The Berlin Fair continues through Saturday, June 23. The fair wraps up with the Berlin Raceway's Grandstand racing event at 6:30 Saturday night, which is also Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Super Hero Night at the Fair. People are invited to come dressed as their favorite superheroes. There will also be carnival games, rides and a petting zoo.

Michigan's longest running fair has opened its gates.

Those not into superheroes may enjoy being royalty for the day. Saturday, is 'Princess Day' at John Ball Zoo. From 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. guests are invited to dress up and meet their favorite prince or princess, including Sleeping Beauty. There will even be a special meet-and-greet for zoo members.

Also at the zoo, on Sunday, Family Promise of Grand Rapids is hosting its inaugural 'Family Frolic at the Zoo', from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m.

In addition to seeing the animals, guests can enjoy a scavenger hunt, enter raffles and win prizes. Kids 16 and under get in free. Tickets are $15 for adults. The money raised goes to support homeless children and families in West Michigan.

If passed, a proposed millage would use funds to care for animals and artifacts, repair and improve exhibits, and enhance educational programs in the John Ball Zoo and Grand Rapids Public Museum.

And, the Grand River Water Festival is returning for the 9th year this weekend. The free event features food trucks, vendors, activities and live music from several genres. Organizers use it to attract people to come out to come learn about clean water and being good stewards. It starts at noon at Riverside Park this Saturday.

Also happening Saturday, the 23, hundreds of cyclists will take to the road in downtown Grand Rapids. The MSU Gran Fondo returns. The annual ride helps raise support in the fight against skin cancer.
