COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. — Tuesday night two non-profits worked together to make sure widows felt special as they remembered their special someone ahead of Valentine's Day.
Amore in Comstock Park hosted an annual Valentine's Day dinner for widows. Non-profits I Understand and Food Hugs made the dinner possible.
"I have been a widow for 20 years," said Vonnie Woodrick. "And I am very familiar with that feeling of walking to the store and seeing the Valentine cards and hearing all of the commercials and everybody going out to dinner and seeing all the Facebook posts. And it triggers loneliness. And it makes you grieve even more."
For a holiday that can be a painful reminder of who they're missing, it can bring comfort to be surrounded by people who understand.
"A lot of them have a hard time coming to events like this," said Chef Jenna Arcidiacono. "But we're so proud of them for showing up and, and sitting near someone new and making a new friend who has gone through the same situation they have."
Organizers said the dinner gets bigger and bigger every year.
