GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Organizers of the 2020 Amway River Bank Run have rescheduled the race to comply with federal social distancing requirements.
The race will be moved from May 9, 2020 to Oct. 24, 2020.
"After careful consideration and consult with health professionals, including health partner Spectrum Health, Amway River Bank Run organizers have decided to reschedule the 2020 race," a statement from the Amway River Bank Run said.
All April training events and early May pre-race activities have been canceled. A new training and event schedule will be shared as soon as possible, organizers said.
"The social distancing required to prevent the spread of COVID-19 has forced the cancellation of many events nationwide so the Amway River Bank Run is no exception," the statement continued. "The safety of the runners, volunteers and supporters is at the center of this decision."
Organizers of the race acknowledged the inconvenience rescheduling will cause and said they are working to ensure a smooth transition. For more information and announcements about the Amway River Bank Run, sign up for its newsletter.
Earlier this week, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered a temporary ban on gatherings of 50 or more people. Her executive order complies with recent Center for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines that recommend postponing or canceling large gatherings for eight weeks.
The Trump administration and federal COVID-19 task force also recommended keeping group events and gatherings small this week -- suggesting people should be limited to 10 or less.
