Scouting America hosts Community Day of Remembrance and Scout Salute to honor 9/11 victims

The ceremony honors service members who dedicated their lives to service on September 11, 2001.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Scouting America is hosting its annual Community Day of Remembrance and Scout Salute to honor the victims of 9/11.

This is the 23rd year of the all-day salute, which honors the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001.

Community members are welcome to pay tribute at the ceremony outside the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids. The ceremony began at 7:15 a.m. and will continue until 8 p.m.

“I can remember some of the early years there were not a lot of folks out here,” said Michigan State Fire Marshal Kevin Sehlmeyer. “To maintain a salute from sunup to sundown takes a lot of work, and it takes a lot of effort… I want to thank the Boy Scouts for continuing this tradition because we all said we would never forget, and I can share right here in Grand Rapids, Michigan, we haven't forgotten.”

Sehlmeyer encourages those who cannot make the ceremony to find a way to honor the servicemen and women who put their lives on the line that tragic September day.

An all-day livestream will also be available here
