GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Guiding Light in Grand Rapids is hosting a sober Super Bowl party to foster a more welcoming game-day environment for those working to stay sober.
The party is not open to the general public but is being held for those living in Guiding Light's homes, as well as their family members and alumni of the program.
Guiding Light is a nonprofit that has been offering substance abuse recovery services to West Michigan since 1929.
Called Big Game Sober Sunday, the annual event aims to foster feelings of community while staying sober.
"Watching national sporting events and drinking alcohol are often packaged together, but they don’t have to be – nor should they be – for those navigating recovery,” said Guiding Light Executive Director Brian Elve. “Instead of worrying about being or staying sober at an event where others are consuming alcohol, this is an opportunity for people to relax and enjoy the big game while creating new, sober memories.”
Along with watching the Super Bowl, attendees will enjoy food, snacks and nonalcoholic drinks.
The event is being sponsored by Hascall Steel Company, based out of Grandville.
“Guiding Light's Big Game Sober Sunday is not just about watching a game; it's about fostering a sense of camaraderie and joy without the influence of alcohol," said Dag Hascall, CEO of Hascall Steel Company.
Big Game Sober Sunday kicks off on Sunday, Feb. 11.
