KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A Kent County school district is set to host the county's first esports tournament later this month.
Kent Intermediate School District (Kent ISD) is inviting high school students, grades 9-12, to participate in the Kent County Cup, a Super Smash Bros tournament on April 27.
Registration for the 128-player tournament is underway. You can register here. Registration closes on April 20.
“Esports is a growing, world-wide $200 billion industry. Skills learned through esports apply to media production, health sciences, marketing, HR, event management, and computer development”, said Ryan Graham, Director of Workforce Development for Kent ISD.
The tournament will take place at the Kent Career Technical Center located at 1655 E Beltline Ave NE in Grand Rapids. Doors open at 8:45 a.m. and the tournament begins at 10:30 a.m.
Parents are also invited to attend workshops designed to help better understand the world of esports and how to support interests and career development in gaming. The workshops will run from from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.
“Students are earning full ride scholarships as esports athletes on collegiate teams enabling them to earn degrees in many areas of study. The Kent County Cup is an opportunity to see esports in action and interact with representatives from colleges, business, and our Workforce Development team at Kent ISD,” Graham added.
Prizes at the event include the Kent County Cup Championship Belt, Steelcase gaming chairs and more. Lunch and additional prizes will also be provided for competitors.
