OPENING DAY CUT SHORT | Rosa Parks Circle Ice Rink closes early due to weather

As temperatures reached 50 degrees, the ice rink had to close early on its opening day of the season.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — After months of waiting for the annual opening of the Rosa Parks Circle Ice Rink, it had to be closed early due to high temperatures.

Just six hours after opening for the 2023-24 season, the ice rink announced it would be closed for the remainder of the day as temperatures in Grand Rapids floated around 50 degrees.

Rosa Parks Circle Ice Rink announced the closure at 2:40 p.m. Thursday, but said that the rink would be back open Friday morning during normal hours.

On Friday, Dec. 1, when skating resumes, hours will be changed slightly due to the Grand Rapids annual Tree Lighting Ceremony from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

The schedule for open skating times Friday will be:

  • Skating, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
    • Ice resurfacing, 12:30 - 1 p.m.
  • Skating, 1 pm - 2:30 p.m.
    • Ice resurfacing, 2:30 - 3 p.m.
  • Skating, 3 pm - 4:30 p.m.
    • Ice resurfacing, 4:30 - 5 p.m.
  • Event activities, 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. (no skating)
  • Skating, 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.
    • Ice resurfacing, 8 - 8:30 p.m.
  • Skating, 8:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.
