GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Meet this week's Grant Me Hope kid: Acar’Re He's a teen on the go. He enjoys being active with other people and participating in sports; he is especially fond of basketball and football. In fact, he wants to become a pro athlete when he gets older. But will it be the NBA or the NFL that signs Acar'Re? Only time will tell.
When he can't be on the go, Acar'Re enjoys Pokemon and Magic card games and likes to play them with his friends. He also enjoys anime. Acar'Re is described by those who know him well as caring, helpful and polite. His worker says, "Acar'Re is very interested in trying and seeing new things and could be very adventurous if he has the opportunity!" Acar'Re also enjoys church and hopes to become involved in a youth group.
“Acar’Re does not always know how to handle his emotions when he gets upset,” says his worker. He does receive services to help him develop coping skills to manage his feelings. In school, Acar’Re earns good grades when he completes assignments, but he could benefit from assistance to help him stay on task in the classroom. He would also benefit from parents who help him navigate social situations with peers.
Acar’Re would do best with a single male parent or two male parents or a mom and dad. He also would do best as the only child in the home. He states a preference for an urban environment but also says he "doesn't care much." He does care about dogs, however, and he'd be happy if his forever family had a dog or two.
His new parent or parents should be experienced, flexible and knowledgeable of the impact of trauma on a child. They will need to be strong advocates for the services that will benefit Acar’Re’s success. Finally, his family must be open to letting Acar’Re maintain contact with his siblings and establishing boundaries with those visits.
