Grant Me Hope: Cal

12-Year-Old Cal enjoys sports and hopes to one day become a police officer.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Cal has the skills and interests to become a great contributor to a forever family. He loves interacting with others, enjoys life’s simple pleasures and likes helping around the house. Cal might even become a family protector since he wants to become a police officer. Cal’s favorite things to do include reading, playing video games, riding bikes and playing basketball. If he could travel anywhere, Cal would visit Wisconsin because “they have a great basketball team,” he says. On his list of favorite things, Cal includes pizza for food, red and blue for color and cheetahs and rabbits for animals. He dreams of having the most interesting trifecta of pets: a dog, hamster and cat. Cal’s favorite holiday is Christmas because of the presents. His worker calls Cal a friendly, kind and polite boy who is motivated, ambitious, polite and helpful. He’s called a leader who does great in school. When he’s asked to describe himself, Cal says, “I am a good kid.” Once he finds his forever family, Cal hopes to go to the pet store with them.

Cal loves to learn and enjoys school but could use help in relationships with others. Even so, his worker says Cal is making improvements in that area. Cal also gets help to regulate his emotions and works on recognizing how to improve. Cal says history is his favorite subject in school.

Cal’s new forever family needs to understand the impact of trauma on a child. Cal would do best with two experienced parents who are patient and able to provide the structure, support and supervision that will help him thrive at home, at school and in the community. His new family must advocate for the services that will benefit Cal. In addition, Cal would do best as the youngest child in his new forever family. Finally, his new family must be open to letting Cal maintain his sibling relationships.
