GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — If you've ever had one of those potted plant gift baskets then you know while they're beautiful, they can also be difficult to keep alive.
The My West Michigan crew headed out to the Plant Parlor, located at 1509 Wealthy St. SE in Grand Rapids, for some plant SOS. The fauna experts had all kind of tips on how to rescue any surviving plants from an oft too quickly gift basket.
Get rid of the decorative container
Many gift-type dish gardens or plant baskets are assembled with multiple small plants arranged close together in a decorative container. It looks full and pretty, but the plants aren't usually meant to remain together for long-term growth -- which is what you want! Re-pot the plants into the appropriate sized planters and make sure they have plenty of space to grow.
Check for pot liners
It's dangerous to keep houseplants in baskets and plant liners, but excess drainage is easily concealed in the base.Sitting water on the bottom of pots could kill off growth, so always check for liners.
If you find yourself wanting to save a special occasion plant that was gifted to you or need some emergency plant advice -- call, text or email The Plant Parlor they're always willing to come to the rescue.
