GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Is "getting more organized" a New Year's resolution of yours? It's a little over 2 weeks into the new year and it's time to get serious about organizing your life.
Kate Wert, the owner of Moxie Life Organizing, LLC, joined My West Michigan with tips on how to start the daunting task or organization and how to keep up with it.
She also providing the following information:
The first step toward getting to where you want to be is managing your mindset. If the motivation just isn’t there, try to cast a deeper vision for what prompted you to start up that Pinterest board or binge watch the most trending organizing series on television. Are you craving more comfort? Seeking solace because the constant to do list and need to manage your surroundings leaves you feeling guilty and overwhelmed?
Rather than viewing organizing as a job to get done, try to see it as an opportunity to invest in a better life – whether it be spending more time with your kids or making it to that Sunday night slow flow yoga session – you have a right to do it without guilt!
You don’t have to be a minimalist to live “the good life” but any organizer will tell you that less stuff translates into more time, money, and energy to give to what matters to you most. Still there’s no “one size fits all” to getting organized. Use your own yardstick for goals and don’t be afraid to embrace a little bit of chaos. Life is messy!
Try to avoid magnifying the project and rather break it down into more realistic tasks. Start small, think 30 minute scheduled sessions 2-3 times a week, to prevent overwhelm and set yourself up for success. Get down under a sink or dive into a jumbled junk drawer - set your timer and go! Once the timer goes off, it’s ok if you leave a temporary mess behind. Getting organized is a journey. It doesn’t happen overnight and if you truly commit, the pieces will start to come together.
