GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — Darren Dykhouse is no stranger to the paranormal as a professional ghost hunter and as a self-described empath.
"I remember hearing someone running down the hallway to my bedroom, and then they kicked the door open, but no one was there," Dykhouse said about the ghostly experiences he remembered as a child.
Six years ago, he turned that affinity for the paranormal into a YouTube channel, Lakeshore Paranormal. Since then, he's traveled to haunted locations across West Michigan, capturing all sorts of hauntings.
"I've been poked, scratched. You know, pushed," Dykhouse said. "There's something there."
The 13 On Your Side team met Dykhouse for a ghost hunt at one of the most active locations he's been to: Nunica Cemetary.
However, all of the footage was mysteriously wiped from our camera and SD card.
"That doesn't surprise me. They probably wiped everything out when they did that," Dykhouse said.
Though it's something the 13 On Your Side photojournalist team has never seen, it's something Dykhouse experiences often.
"Some even say they can have the power to drain a battery, or corrupt, you know, hard drives." Dykhouse said. "It's happened to me quite often."
The second time we interviewed Dykhouse, this time at Lake Forest Cemetary in Grand Haven, the footage survived. While there may be skeptics, he encourages people to look to their own experiences.
"What I would tell people is, it's really about their own experiences. You know, it's really hard to convince a skeptic until they've had their own experience," Dykhouse said.
He does take suggestions for haunted locations around West Michigan and will make house calls for people having spooky experiences at home.
