MUSKEGON, Mich. — Freezin’ for a reason… This Saturday is Muskegon’s Polar Plunge and a student at Orchard View Early Elementary will be taking the plunge in honor of his classmate.
"Ty wanted to jump for polar plunge to honor my brother's memory and also jump for his classmate," said Orchard View Early Elementary teacher Mrs. McMullin.
Hundreds will be freezin' for a reason on Saturday to take part in the Muskegon Polar Plunge. This plunge is even more special for 7-year-old Ty Johnson.
Camryn is a classmate of Ty's with special needs.
Ty is so enthusiastic about the polar plunge that his teachers are also going to jump into Muskegon Lake on Saturday. Ty is part of Team Shane in honor of his teacher's deceased brother. The team has raised a little under $2,500. They're helping to spread awareness for athletes with intellectual disabilities who are part of Special Olympics Michigan.
McMullin said Ty is a team player and loves to support his classmates.
"Ty has a gentle spirit. He has a love for kids. And Ty just wanted to honor Cam and show his support for students who might need a little bit more help and support along the way. So he helped raise money for that also last year, and doing it again his second year," said McMullin.
Ty's teachers said he's ready for the plunge and can't wait for Saturday.
"Thank you Ty for jumping with us and helping us raise money for a very, very special cause. Ty is a great kid."
The polar plunge is on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Hartshorn Marina in Muskegon. Hundreds of people are expected to attend.
