GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Samantha Hendricks from Schuler Books joined us to talk about Book buying for the younger set. She offered up the following advice.
- Think about the child's age level/ reading level. Are they a young advanced reader? A reluctant reader?
- Make note of the things they enjoy reading, and if they aren't big readers maybe something they enjoy doing. A hobby, sport, crafting or gaming. Your local bookstore can help make suggestions based on these. For example a reluctant reader might enjoy Graphic Novels.
- A book series is the gift that keeps on giving. Have they started one? Is there one that matches their reading level and topics they'd enjoy? Yes there is, always yes :)
- Think about what’s happening in the world. Books are a great portal to bring those worldly issues to them in an age appropriate way.
- Ask a bookseller. We have folks here that specialize in different areas and can help you find just the right book.
