Training for a Triathlon: Shave seconds off your run and transitions with these tips

Coach Kari Stuart has pro-tips for saving time during transitions

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — We all learned to run when we were little. Other than a technique tune-up, this will be the easiest discipline for most during training. However, it could be the most difficult if you don't have a strategy going into race day.

Think of the triathlon as one race rather than three separate races -- each leg should be raced with the next in mind. For example, the bike discipline will either make or break your run, depending on whether you push yourself to the max or hold back and save some leg energy.

The brick workouts coming up in the triathlon training schedule will help mimic leg fatigue and help you discover how hard you can push during the bike leg.

There's little gear you'll need for the run, but having a good pair of shoes fit for your running style cannot be overstated. Striders in Grandville has experts to help you find your perfect shoe before race day.

Another successful strategy is thinking through discipline transitions. Each athlete has a limited amount of space for all their gear. Have all your gear laid out in the order you will need it. Also, be tidy! Other athletes are transitioning at the same time and you won't want to infringe on their space.
