GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Red, white and blue filled the streets in downtown Grand Rapids for the annual Veterans Day Parade on Monday. Members of the community came out to attend the parade and honor local veterans.
United Veterans Council Parade Coordinator, Jesse Pahman, said Monday's parade was a celebration—aiming to honor veterans and acknowledge them for their service.
“I think it's important for people to see just how many people have served, and I think that we don't really call attention to the sacrifices that we've made, but we have, and I think it is nice, even if it's just one day a year, to be able to say thank you, because every one of us has given something,” said Pahman.
The parade started at 7 p.m. Monday, beginning near Calder Plaza and ending at Veterans Memorial Park. It was followed by a ceremony and salute, to honor veterans for their service.
Mel Bauman is the commander of the United Veterans Council. After serving the country for 40 years, he said being at the parade meant a lot to him.
“We host this parade every year, and it's just a great time to honor our veterans. I felt proud to serve my country, and it was just a great experience,” said Bauman.
As of 2024, there are more than 500,000 veterans in Michigan. Michigan also ranks 12th in the largest veteran population in the country.
Pahman said as a veteran himself, he’s grateful for Monday night's celebration and encourages the community to learn more about how they can help veterans in their area.
“We encourage everybody who wants to know about Veterans Affairs in Kent County to attend the council meetings every last Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. and we meet at Heroes Corner on Eastern and 48th Street," said Pahman.
