Governor Whitmer proclaims July as Michigan Wildlife Conservation Month

The month's goal is to celebrate Michigan's wildlife and raise awareness about the importance of fishing and hunting.

MICHIGAN, USA — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed July as Michigan Wildlife Conservation Month to celebrate Michigan’s wildlife and raise awareness about the importance of fishing and hunting.

The Michigan Wildlife Council is highlighting the month of July with special activities to help connect more Michiganders with the outdoors.

Nick Buggia, one of the chairs on the council, said the sales of hunting and fishing licenses provide the most conservation funding to not only Michigan, but states across the country.

He said they're seeing an increase in younger people joining the conservation movement with the growing popularity of fishing and hunting.

"Especially in fishing, you know, a rise and younger people participating in the sport. You know, we've seen that a little bit in hunting as well. It seems like, during COVID, there was a huge surge and folks utilizing the outdoors for both hunting and fishing. So what that tells us is, when people have the time, they're they're choosing to go out and do these activities." said Buggia.

Buggia said with these efforts, the council hopes to preserve Michigan’s wildlife and natural resources for future generations.
