Business owner helps raise money for family of a teen with brain cancer

A Grand Rapids business owner is helping a mother from Nicaragua raise money for her son who has brain cancer and needs surgery.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Grand Rapids business owner is helping raise money for a mom whose teenage son has cancer.

Seven months ago Alejandra Bodan moved to Grand Rapids from Nicaragua to create a better life for her family. Just last month, her son Luis was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor.

“He's 15 years old and she's looking for help. She's coming from seven months of coming to the United States, to generate some money to give a better life to her family. She got surprised a month ago. The doctor called her and told her, her son has a brain tumor that’s affected everything, the whole organs of the body," said Angelica Balasquez, owner of La Casa de La Cobija.

Balasquez hosted a fundraiser at her store on May 19 to help Alejandra raise money for her son’s surgery.

“We have a very great great community. Every time they come in they only give you the money they give the heart and this is a great opportunity for us for community to serve this beautiful lady," said Balasquez.

Out of the 15 thousand dollars needed for the surgery, Angelica’s event raised three thousand dollars—but she said they need the community's help to raise more.

“She needs 15,000 dollars. We make it just yesterday a beautiful fundraiser to sell food and everything but God has another plan for us. I implore everybody to listen this video to support Alejandra," said Balasquez.
